Almunecar, I love this town, we have lived here for all most seven years and it just gets better. We have now got planning for a seven star hotel the first in Europe,  I think we should watch this space! After several years of Almunecar building infrastructure the area is now perfectly placed for consistent growth in the coming years ahead. A couple of large developments are being restarted and it is obvious that the market has started to turn.

Almunecar or Almuñécar as it is correctly written in Spanish, is the largest resort village on the whole of the Costa Tropical. It has a resident population of approximately 30,000 people but this swells to 150,000 during the first 3 weeks of August and Easter Week (known in Spain as Semana Santa). Almunecar is a vibrant place to live which is busy all year round and has ample business and employment opportunities for those people coming looking to live and work on the Costa Tropical. Population statistics show that the majority of people living here in Almunecar are Spanish (90%), with a mixture of northern Europeans ( Danish, German, Dutch, French) making up the rest.

Almunecar has a beautiful old town with monuments and sites of interest dating back over 2000 years, when Almunecar was ruled by the Phoenicians and was a prosperous trading port. Then came the Romans followed by the Moors and then the Christians, all of whom left their mark, which is plain to see. Almunecar old town is topped by the recently refurbished St. Miguel castle, which dates back over a 1000 years and stands proudly overlooking the town and out to the Mediterranean Sea.

400 years BC, Almunecar was originally known as Sexi, and later during the reign of Julius Caesar was given the full title Sexi Firmun lulium, famous for its fish curing and renowned salting factories. Almunecar is referred to many times throughout history (ref."Almuñécar Romano" by Federico Molina Fajardo) showing it´s importance as a town.

Development has seen Almunecar town grow and it now has many urbanisation's to suit all needs and financial limitations, from apartments for sale in the old town to new apartments for sale in P4, to established villas for sale in Almunecar´s prestigious urbanisation's of Cotobro, Los Pinos and Mount Alemendros. Cotobro is famous for its roman bridge, nudest beach, exclusive villas close to the sea and high quality Trocadero restaurant. Los Pinos has a larger number of foreigners due to the Almunecar International School being right in the middle of the Urbanisation. Mount Almendros is well known for its views across Salobrena and across the agricultural land to Motril.

Almunecar town is famous for its vega (orchards), the best on the Costa Tropical. A lush swathe of vegetation and orchards which run through the middle of the town and is one of the few places to have a climate able to grow Chiramoyas (a fruit which tastes like vanilla ice cream with lots of pips). Recent developments in Almunecar have seen three new 4 star hotels, 5 new underground car parks providing 2000 spaces, a new 6 km cycle track along the new promenades, diving platforms, bmx track, football pitches, padel courts and gym equipment on the beach. There is now a Sunday market in Almunecar to compliment the huge Friday market.

Property for sale in Almunecar is currently considered very good investment potential. Current proposals for the future include 3 new marinas and 2 golf courses to provide a more balanced all year round tourist season for Almunecar ( recent news suggests Junta de Andalucia and Almunecar have agreed 2 marinas and one golf course). The new motorway extension from Malaga is now complete to the other side of Almunecar making the airport run a very easy one, taking less than an hour to get there. The new motorway extension from Granada is now finished. Also in three years time it should be possible to drive from Malaga to France on the motorway as they finish the final stretch from Salobrena to Almeria.

The main fiesta for Almunecar is on the 15th of August and comprises of parties a huge fun fair and tremendous firework display usually set to music. Either pick your spot on the main beach in town or watch from Los Pinos or Cotobro which both overlook the Almunecar. Another great fiesta in Almunecar is San Juan at the end of June, alternatively known as the fiesta of fire and water, whereby thousands of people have parties and bonfires on the beach. This is the only occasion when it is permitted to camp on the beach any where in Andalucia. The idea is to party up until midnight, then on the stroke of 12.00, jump in to the sea and cleanse your body and then jump over a bonfire (small) to rid the evil spirits from your soul. For the faint hearted just have a drink and enjoy the atmosphere!

Almunecar has kilometres of beaches, 100s of restaurants and bars, Almunecar Aqua tropic water park, Majeulo Ornothological Park, Loro Sexi bird park, the museum, great scuba diving, surfing in the winter,some of the best para-gliding in Europe etc etc .Almunecar has some of the best sports facilities in Andalucia for a town of its size with three tennis clubs, 10 public padel and tennis courts, 3 artificial grass pitches, 1 natural grass pitch and stadium with athletics track, 2 music and dance acadamies etc.The list of things to do in Almunecar is endless.It is for these reasons that Almunecar makes an ideal place to live as well as to holiday!
